Embattled Western United cut from A-Leagues
The club’s licence loss follows months of financial, governance and legal troubles, including a $15.5 million tax debt and unpaid wages for former staff.
On Monday, the Australian Professional Leagues officially terminated Western United's participation agreement, ending the club's presence in A-League competitions after conditional hibernation since September 2025.
The club was wound up in insolvency on Tuesday, with receiver Alvarez and Marsal taking control of parent company WMG Holdings on behalf of Johnson Controls to recoup a reported 74 million in debt.
Removalists entered the Tarneit home ground on Tuesday collecting equipment worth up to $200,000, while current and former employees remain owed more than six months of back pay, with one staff member owed roughly $30,000.
Football Victoria chief executive Dan Birrell ruled that Western United teams cannot play further competition fixtures, leaving academy players including the sons of Vusumizi Gumbo in sporting limbo.
United stated on Monday that it aims to preserve the club's identity and work toward a return for the 2027-28 season, hoping the reset attracts new custodians and investment.
