Cybercab Begins Production, but Elon Musk Says It Will Be 'Very Slow' to Start
Musk said production has begun as Tesla posted videos of the steering-wheel-less two-seater rolling off the line and driving around the factory.
- On Friday, CEO Elon Musk shared footage of Tesla Cybercab production at Giga Texas in Austin, declaring, "Cybercab has started production." The video showed the autonomous two-seater rolling off the line.
- Unveiled in 2024 at Tesla's "We, Robot" event, the fully autonomous Cybercab features butterfly wing doors and lacks a steering wheel or pedals. Tesla moved production timelines up to 2026 to accelerate its autonomous vehicle strategy.
- Musk said production would be "very slow" initially but would "ramp up and go" exponentially later this year, as Tesla expects "volume production of both Cybercab and the Tesla Semi this year."
- Tesla's current self-driving rideshare fleet, called Robotaxis, consists of autonomous Model Y cars, but the company plans for the Cybercab to eventually replace them as the fleet's highest volume vehicle.
- Before the Cybercab hits public roads, Tesla must prove the vehicles can reliably drive themselves to satisfy regulators, while facing competition from established operators like Waymo and Uber in autonomous driving.
