Elenore Sturko loses seat for CentreBC in return to Surrey South
Megan Knight is projected to win Surrey South as CentreBC is forecast to miss out on any legislature seats, leaving Elenore Sturko disappointed.
On Saturday, October 24, the B.C. Conservative Party swept to a majority government, securing a projected 64 of 93 seats and ending the nine-year tenure of the New Democratic Party led by David Eby. Interim leader Lorne Doerkson spearheaded the landslide victory.
Eby called the snap election on September 22, seeking a new mandate to address a "stalled out" legislature. The Conservatives unified behind Doerkson while voter dissatisfaction with the government's direction grew.
Conservative candidate Megan Knight won Surrey South, defeating CentreBC leader Elenore Sturko. The party failed to secure any seats in the legislature despite campaigning on providing an independent voice.
Voter turnout plummeted to a record low of 48.1 per cent, with Elections BC citing logistical challenges of the snap election for manual ballot counting. Nearly 900,000 advance votes were tabulated electronically.
Premier-Designate Doerkson plans to immediately address election rule changes to prevent overlapping provincial and municipal voting cycles. The administration faces governing a province where significant electorate participation declined.
