Electra, City of Helsinki, and Haaga-Helia University Sign MOU to Explore Direct Aviation Across the Gulf of Finland
The study will assess passenger demand, access-point design and economics for a route serving 7.5 million annual travelers, officials said.
- On Thursday, Electra announced a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Helsinki and Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences to explore regional air mobility solutions across the Gulf of Finland.
- Helsinki and Tallinn are twin cities separated by 80 kilometers, where approximately 7.5 million travelers move annually despite travel friction from ferries and traditional airports.
- Electra's hybrid-electric EL9 Ultra Short aircraft can take off and land in just 50 metres, delivering 70% lower operating costs than helicopters and eVTOLs.
- The parties will conduct a feasibility study covering infrastructure design, passenger demand, and operating economics, while exploring a future flight demonstration using the EL2 technology demonstrator.
- "Helsinki aims to grow sustainably while strengthening its accessibility," said Ville Lehmuskoski, Executive Director, Urban Environment Division, City of Helsinki, as the study is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
