Election Officials: Mail Ballots, Citizenship Key in Midterms
Administrators cited voter hesitancy in mail ballots and a 5% to 6% drop in requests in one Pennsylvania county.
On Wednesday, The Partnership for Large Election Jurisdictions hosted a roundtable in Washington to address mail-in ballot processes, congressional redistricting, and citizenship verification ahead of Nov. 3.
Over the past year, the Trump administration and Congress pursued tighter mail-in ballot restrictions, including strict return deadlines and citizenship verification requirements ahead of the midterms.
Aaron Blacksberg, federal policy counsel at the Institute for Responsive Government, said the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements system has limitations, while Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Wendy Sartory Link warned that verification database information is often outdated.
St. Louis County Director of Elections Eric Fey reported that 15,000 voters already received ballots using the 2022 map, while Allegheny County director Jessica Garofolo observed a 5% to 6% drop in mail-in requests following Supreme Court rulings.
Los Angeles County Clerk Dean Logan expects increased use of drop boxes and in-person voting following U.S. Postal Service policy updates, as administrators urge voters to create a plan and verify registration before Nov. 3.
