Relations between Greece and Turkey deteriorated after Ankara announced the establishment of two marine parks in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas. According to Athens, these two protected areas claimed by Turkey occupy international waters and extend over the Greek continental shelf.
Turkey announced earlier on Monday the creation of two marine protected areas in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coasts of Fethiye and Kas and in the north of the Aegean Sea off the Dardanelles, around military wrecks of the First World War.
Turkey is publishing new marine protected areas and Greece is responding promptly. The designated areas would lie in international waters and reach Greek territory, according to the government in Athens. The relationship between the two countries has recently become more tense.
