EGYPT, JUL 21 – Egypt offers free train rides to Sudanese refugees returning home amid ongoing civil war that displaced over 7 million and killed more than 40,000, officials said.
- On Monday, the first voluntary return trips of Sudanese citizens departed from Cairo's central station, funded by the Egyptian government, with hundreds boarding for Khartoum.
- Amid the civil war, Sudan has experienced over 7 million internal displacements since April 2023, worsening the humanitarian crisis, with no attribution needed.
- Logistical arrangements include a 12-hour train to Aswan, ferries, buses, and coordination over two months to facilitate the return of over 300,000 Sudanese, Moataz Salem said.
- After boarding, Asem al-Taieb, Sudanese journalist, said `some cried with overwhelming emotions`, highlighting returnees' hope amid devastation.
