EFL to ask Hull City and Watford for observations after late postponement
The English Football League will collect feedback from Hull City and Watford after their match was postponed due to icy conditions outside the pitch despite it being playable.
- The EFL will seek observations from Hull City and Watford after the fixture was postponed about 18 minutes before kick-off on Jan 4, 2026.
- Despite inspections and thawing attempts, Hull City's groundstaff used pitch lamps and gas flames but icy surrounding areas remained unsafe despite the playing surface passed fit by referee Anthony Backhouse.
- Players were informed while still on the pitch, and around 21,000 supporters were expected including around 1,000 travelling fans, with less than 15 minutes' notice before kick-off.
- The EFL will hear both clubs' perspectives this week as is common practice after postponements, and clubs say a new date will be announced in due course with match tickets remaining valid for ticket holders and hospitality guests.
- The postponement was one of several fixtures called off due to frozen pitches as Watford said `We reiterate we were ready and willing to play after the pitch was passed fit by the referee`.
