Nigeria: IGP Orders Dismissal, Prosecution of Police Officers Over Delta Extra-Judicial Killing

The police disciplinary committee found gross violations of firearms rules and recommended dismissal and criminal prosecution for the officers.

  • On Wednesday, IGP Olutunji Disu ordered the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman and other officers involved in the extrajudicial killing of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.
  • The Force Disciplinary Committee determined that Usman acted in gross violation of Force Order 237, establishing "unequivocally" that his actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a betrayal of the oath to uphold the law.
  • After their arrest, the officers were transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings, which Disu described as "criminal, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable" during a press briefing.
  • The Inspector-General forwarded the dismissal recommendations to the Police Service Commission for ratification, assuring the victim's family the Force is "fully committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served."
  • Force spokesperson Anthony Okon reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance against extrajudicial actions, confirming officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution upon completion of administrative procedures.
