Over my 35-year career in conservation, I have come to realize that today’s planetary crisis is not just the result of destruction and neglect, but also of something much deeper: our economic systems’ blindness to the value of nature. As governments pursue GDP growth and corporations seek to maximize profits, they fail to put in place the vast ecosystems that support our economies, our communities, and our personal well-being.
