B.C. NDP Promises to Freeze Car Insurance Rates for 3 Years
The BC NDP says the extension will save the average driver about $500 a year and keep rates frozen for a full decade.
On Thursday, British Columbia New Democrat Leader David Eby announced that an NDP government would extend the ICBC rate freeze for another three years, keeping rates stable until spring 2030.
Campaigning in Richmond, Eby touted the NDP's financial management record, stating his government saved the average driver about $500 annually while freezing rates for seven years.
Seeking to overhaul the system, Interim Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson proposed replacing the no-fault insurance model with a hybrid system, citing that the current scheme has been "very challenging" for residents.
Eby criticized the potential shift, claiming that under Doerkson's plan, car insurance costs could double, while Doerkson emphasized the need to "get it right for people that have been affected by catastrophic injury."
Acknowledging the no-fault system is "not perfect," Eby noted that a promised legislative review was delayed by the snap election call but pledged to re-establish the committee if re-elected.
