Ebola scientists to probe Nigeria case origin, Africa CDC says
Africa CDC will test whether the Nigerian case is linked to Kenya’s first patient after genomic sequencing showed the viruses differed by one mutation.
- On Monday, Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya announced a team of leading scientists led by Congolese expert Jean-Jacques Muyembe will travel to Abuja to investigate Nigeria's first Ebola case since 2014.
- Genomic sequencing conducted by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention revealed the virus differs by only one mutation from the strain identified in Kenya's recent imported case, offering fresh scientific insight.
- Health authorities are monitoring 54 primary contacts, including 44 health workers and nine others, while the 42-year-old Ugandan-born patient shows signs of recovery, according to NCDC Director-General Jide Idris.
- Both patients transited through Entebbe International Airport in Uganda on October 3, prompting scientists to probe a potential link; however, no direct transmission has been confirmed by health officials.
- Africa CDC officials emphasize that many unknowns remain regarding the infection source, as Kaseya stated, "We have so many unknowns." The team works to resolve conflicting accounts regarding the patient's travel history.
