Vance could be a major Category 3 hurricane Friday as it nears Mexico
Forecasters said warm waters and low wind shear could help Vance intensify quickly as dangerous surf and rip currents threaten southern Mexico.
- On Friday, Tropical Storm Vance strengthened into a hurricane off Mexico's coast, the National Hurricane Center said. The storm is forecast to intensify into a major Category 3 hurricane by day's end.
- NHC initially designated the system as Tropical Depression Twenty-Two-E on Oct 21 before it strengthened into Tropical Storm Vance. This marks the 22nd named tropical cyclone of the eastern Pacific season.
- On Thursday, the center of Vance was approximately 810 km south of Acapulco with maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h and central pressure of 997 mb. Deep convection expanded near the center, indicating rapid intensification.
- Swells generated by the hurricane are expected to affect portions of southern and southwestern Mexico through the weekend. NHC warns these waves are likely to produce life-threatening surf and rip-current conditions.
- Forecasters expect the storm to continue a slow north-northwest motion, though confidence in the long-range track has decreased. The Pacific basin averages 15 named storms, eight hurricanes, and four major hurricanes annually.
