- Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham said the program started after a veteran wrote, "Hey, Dawn, I want 100 birthday cards for my 100th birthday," and the office now promotes this tradition statewide.
- Supporters can mail cards to Bowen at Watkins-Logan, 11466 Honor Lane, Tyler, Texas 75708, providing an opportunity for the community to recognize his service and bring joy to the centenarian veteran.
- Born in Luling, Bowen enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1945 and served at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, during the final months of World War II before his honorable discharge in 1946.
