East Sussex train derailment update released
Network Rail will use 125-tonne cranes to lift three derailed carriages as the line stays closed and investigators continue their inquiry.
On Thursday, August 13, 2026, three carriages of a Southern Railway service derailed near Lewes, leaving the train on its side and prompting a major emergency response.
Recovery efforts are "particularly difficult" due to the site's proximity to a river and limited residential road access, requiring specialist 125-tonne rail-mounted cranes to lift the carriages from the embankment.
Emergency services transported 20 passengers to hospital, including two with serious injuries, while the Rail Accident Investigation Branch concluded its on-site investigation on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
Network Rail and Southern Railway stated the line between Lewes and Haywards Heath will remain closed for "at least another ten days" while crews recover the train and repair infrastructure.
Travelers are advised to check information before journeys, as replacement buses serve the affected route and operators suggest using alternative services via Brighton to minimize disruption in the weeks ahead.
