Earth, Wind & Fire Drummer in Rehab; Concert with Lionel Richie Canceled
The fundraiser says Paris still faces a long recovery and more than $101,000 has been raised toward a $110,000 goal.
On Thursday, Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris, 58, moved to a rehabilitation center after completing a two-month hospital stay in San Francisco following a serious medical emergency.
Paris suffered a spinal cord injury and 'cardiac incident' on August 6, shortly before the band was scheduled to perform with Lionel Richie at San Francisco's Chase Center.
With no medical insurance, Paris and his wife, Kathy Merrick, face significant financial strain; the GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $101,000 of its $110,000 goal.
Ticketmaster formally canceled the twice-postponed concert at Chase Center with Lionel Richie this week, though refunds for some fans have not yet been issued.
Paris faces a long road toward regaining independence and returning home, while Merrick pursues "every available source of assistance," including Medicare and workers' compensation, to manage ongoing medical expenses.
