Earl Monroe, Former Knicks Celebrate Basketball High School Built for Careers Beyond the Court
The $39.5 million campus will serve 440 students and expand a charter school built around careers in sports, not playing basketball.
On Thursday, the Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School opened its permanent facility in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx, marking a milestone for the charter school founded to connect academics with basketball-related career opportunities.
Founder Dan Klores created the charter school to connect academics with sports-related careers like analytics and marketing, serving 440 students in grades 9-12 after relocating from the Pelham Bay section.
The new $39.5 million, 69,000-square-foot facility features specialized classrooms and studios; since 2025, every graduate has been accepted to at least one college or university.
Hall of Famer Earl Monroe joined NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and former Knicks legend Bill Bradley at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, celebrating the school's unique curriculum designed for off-the-court careers.
Monroe hopes students will use their education to benefit future generations, embodying the school's motto that "a ball and a book can change the world," Klores said.
