Russian satellite makes possibly unprecedented approach to another spacecraft without permission

LeoLabs said the maneuver appeared deliberate and could support inspection, shadowing, or interference.

  • On Friday, Russia's military satellite Kosmos-2612 adjusted its orbit to approach ICEYE-X36, a Finnish-built radar satellite providing imagery to Ukraine. Space surveillance firm LeoLabs identified the "unusual" maneuver, which brought the two objects within approximately 5 kilometers of each other.
  • Experts identified previous instances of Russian satellites executing "concerning maneuvers" around the Finnish craft, which supplies Ukraine. Launched from Plesetsk in April 2026, Kosmos-2612 previously reduced separation from about 320 kilometers to around 5 kilometers in less than 24 hours.
  • Independent tracker Marco Langbroek described the maneuver as a deliberate attempt to synchronize orbital periods, a finding confirmed by astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell using updated orbital data. The proximity raised concerns about potential interference.
  • The 1967 Outer Space Treaty specifies no universal minimum distance but mandates "due regard" for other states' activities. The U.S. retains potential options, including seeking compensation under the 1972 Liability Convention or imposing sanctions should Cosmos-2612 damage ICEYE-X36.
  • Orbital modelling projects repeated close passes, with one predicted for October 19 at a miss distance of about 150 meters. The incident exposes the vulnerability of commercial infrastructure as the conflict continues to reach satellites orbiting roughly 550 kilometers above Earth.

Russian satellite makes possibly unprecedented approach of another spacecraft without permission

A rare move by a Russian-made satellite brought it within just a few miles of a commercial Earth-observation satellite that may be used to provide national security services to countries such as Ukraine.
