New Electric Motorcycle Two-Speed Transmission Promises to Maintain Torque Through Gear Changes
- At the upcoming EICMA show in Milan, Italy, British company E-Motiv Shift Systems will unveil Demo-1, a new electric motorcycle demonstrator featuring a unique two-speed transmission designed to shift gears without interrupting power delivery.
- Unlike conventional single-speed electric drivetrains, this system evolves seamless gear-shifting technology originally created by Zeroshift and fitted on Aprilia MotoGP racing bikes since 2015 to maintain torque during gear changes.
- A £1 million UK government-funded project supported development, involving motorcycle manufacturer BSA, the University of Bath, the Institute of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems , and design consultancy Envisage.
- E-Motiv will exhibit the prototype at EICMA from November 3 to November 8, though the demonstrator remains a development project rather than a production-ready vehicle intended to attract major manufacturers.
- Real-World testing of the transmission technology is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027, as E-Motiv works to demonstrate the system's capabilities to major motorcycle manufacturers.
