New Driving Test Changes to Be Introduced From Next Week in UK
The DVSA's changes aim to improve road safety by focusing tests on faster, rural roads and reducing mandatory stops, following a successful five-month trial at 20 centres.
- On November 24, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency will implement four key changes to UK driving tests at test centres, making them a permanent part of the assessment, the agency said.
- Following an extended trial this year, the DVSA linked the reforms to test backlog pressures, citing a five-month trial at 20 driving test centres and rising demand with earlier bookings.
- Changes to test mechanics include new stop and independent driving rules, alongside updated booking restrictions; candidates will spend longer on faster roads, stops drop from four to three, emergency stops reduce to one in seven, and only learner drivers can book or move tests nearby.
- DVSA says the adjustments won't change required skills or test timing, aiming to boost safety and help learner drivers by reducing waiting times through stricter notice rules.
- Mobilising military driving examiners and cracking down on resold slots are additional steps to tackle backlog affecting about 642,000 learner drivers with future bookings at the end of October.
