New Driving Test Changes to Be Introduced From Next Week in UK
The DVSA's changes aim to improve road safety by focusing tests on faster, rural roads and reducing mandatory stops, following a successful five-month trial at 20 centres.
The DVSA announced four changes coming into force on November 24 across UK driving test centres, with adjustments to better reflect real-world driving, the agency said.
Following an extended five-month trial at 20 driving test centres across Great Britain earlier this year, DVSA said the changes respond to backlog caused by rising demand and earlier bookings.
Changes to test mechanics include new stop and independent driving rules, alongside updated booking restrictions: stops reduce from four to three, emergency stops drop to one in seven, and independent driving may last up to the full test.
DVSA says the adjustments won't change required skills or test timing, aiming to boost safety and reduce waiting times with stricter notice rules for learner drivers.
Mobilising military driving examiners and cracking down on resold slots are additional steps to tackle backlog affecting about 642,000 learner drivers with future bookings at the end of October.
