DVLA Bans Offensive Number Plates for 2026 with £1,000 Fines Dished Out

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency blocked 436 offensive plates for the 2026 release, citing concerns over insults, violence, and political or sexual references.

  • Earlier this year, a Freedom of Information request by personalised plate supplier Regtransfers found the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency has banned more than 400 '26' plates from release for the '26' registration release due next year on UK roads.
  • Under its biannual checks, the DVLA withholds registrations that could be insults, sexual innuendo, drug references, or mention crime, violence, religion, and conflicts like Gaza, Russia and Yemen.
  • Among the unacceptable registrations listed this year are TE26 ROR, GO26 WAR and JE26 HAD, with the DVLA, which holds nearly 53 million driver records and over 47 million vehicle records, offering personalised plates for sale on its website.
  • Motorists risk fines or other penalties, facing up to £1,000 for illegal plates, while the DVLA can revoke plates and police stopped 13,720 drivers in 2020 for violations.
  • Number plate rules require specific materials, font and spacing, including the Charles Wright 2001 font, consistent spacing, reflective material, and Regtransfers CEO Mark Trimbee said banned combinations reveal sociopolitical patterns.
