Depay and Verbruggen Are Ready for the Netherlands’ World Cup Opener Against Japan
Memphis Depay and Bart Verbruggen are fit for the opener, and Ronald Koeman said he will not reveal the Netherlands lineup yet.
Coach Ronald Koeman confirmed Saturday that The Netherlands' entire squad is fit for today's Group F opener against Japan in Dallas, including goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and forward Memphis Depay.
Verbruggen's status was uncertain after sustaining a hip injury during a Monday tune-up match against Uzbekistan, then missing training Wednesday before returning to full practice Friday and Saturday.
Depay, The Netherlands' all-time leading scorer with 55 goals, recovered from a thigh injury before playing for Brazilian club Corinthians; Koeman said the forward is "a key part to our possible success in this World Cup."
Japan enters the tournament without influential captain Wataru Endo, who played 73 times for his country; Coach Moriyasu appointed Ajax Amsterdam defender Ko Itakura as captain, citing his leadership on the pitch.
Moriyasu described Group F as a "very tough group" where any team could win; Japan seeks to survive this stage and improve upon past World Cup performances.
Bart Verbruggen has reappeared at the Dutch national team's training session. The goalkeeper was present at a closed training session of the Oranje in Kansas City ahead of the first World Cup match against Japan on Sunday. This was confirmed by a KNVB spokesperson.
