Durham firefighter killed, two others injured in building collapse during fire
The State Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe as officials say the cause of the fire and collapse remains under investigation.
On Thursday, Oct. 8, Durham Fire Department firefighter Andrew Brokes, 24, died when a commercial building at 410 Marly Drive collapsed during a fire response; two colleagues were injured.
Crews arrived at 3:15 a.m. to find flames shooting through the roof of the multistory structure on Marly Drive. Around 3:30 a.m., the roof and second floor collapsed while firefighters were inside and standing on the structure.
Durham Fire Chief Robert Zoldos confirmed the two injured firefighters were treated and released from Duke Medical Center. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the incident.
The Raleigh Professional Fire Fighters Association, Local 548, expressed support on Facebook, stating, "Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters of the Durham Fire Department today." Chief Zoldos thanked the community for their "outpouring of support."
Officials confirmed all building occupants safely evacuated before firefighters arrived, preventing civilian casualties. The Arson Unit is collecting evidence to determine the fire's cause, with additional information expected as the investigation continues.
