Duke's Patrick Ngongba II 'Unlikely' to Play in Tournament Opener
Duke's 6-foot-11 sophomore, averaging 10.7 points and 6 rebounds, is sidelined by foot soreness and may miss multiple NCAA Tournament games, coach says.
- Duke coach Jon Scheyer confirmed on March 18 that Patrick Ngongba is 'very unlikely' to play in the NCAA opener against Siena on Thursday at 2:50 p.m. in Greenville.
- Patrick Ngongba II has been sidelined since March 2 with lingering right-foot soreness and has been using a knee rover and protective boot for rehab.
- The 6-foot-11, 250-pound sophomore has missed four straight games after starting 28 of 29 this season, according to Scheyer. He is very unlikely to play Thursday's opener.
- Duke will be short-handed down low without Ngongba, adding pressure on Cameron Boozer as Maliq Brown starts but struggles with foul trouble, Nikolas Khamenia sees more minutes, forcing a seven-man rotation.
- Scheyer said the Blue Devils will 'do everything' to have Ngongba ready for Saturday, March 21, and added, 'I can tell you that in a perfect world, I think he'd be playing tomorrow.
