Nigeria: SSS Frees, Compensates Man Wrongly Linked to Oyo Schoolchildren Abduction
SSS Director-General Oluwatosin Ajayi ordered Marwana’s release after a panel found no evidence linking him to the abduction and approved N3 million in compensation.
- On Tuesday, the State Security Service announced the release and compensation of Mustapha Marwana, a carpenter wrongly detained regarding an abduction in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State.
- Although initially linked to the Ansaru terror group, an SSS investigative panel determined Marwana had no operational links to any terrorist organization, prompting Director General Oluwatosin Ajayi to order his immediate release.
- While the government charged three men for the abduction of 46 pupils and seven teachers, investigators found no evidence linking Marwana to the attack, and he was never named in any formal charges.
- The SSS approved N3 million in compensation to assist Marwana with his livelihood, with lawyer Oghene Forgive thanking the agency for its "generosity and dedication to establishing Mustapha's innocence."
- Since Ajayi's appointment, the agency has paid over N300 million to resolve human rights cases, reflecting new measures adopted by the current SSS leadership to support persons cleared after investigations.
