DSS DG Releases Suspected IPOB Member Detained Since 2022
DSS Director General Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi has ordered compensation and release of wrongfully detained individuals, awarding N5 million to Kenneth Nwafor and reviewing pending cases.
- Following internal reviews, DSS Director General Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi ordered the release of Kenneth Okechukwu Nwafor, arrested in July 2022, and awarded him N5 million and free medicare.
- The DG directed investigation officers to review all pending cases to ensure due process, and the new DSS leadership began compensating victims after refusing to pay a court‑awarded N10 million.
- Detailed investigations by DSS investigation personnel exonerated Kenneth Okechukwu Nwafor, and three Abia men—Udemba, Onyedikachi and Eze—suspected of alleged involvement with IPOB were also released.
- Last month Ajayi paid N10 million to an Abuja‑based Igbo businesswoman Mrs. Chineze Ozoadibe and added N10 million for five others to share, signalling mounting liabilities for the Service.
- The DG frames releases and payouts as part of an accountability culture he has fostered, saying Nwafor is not the first Igbo detainee released and compensated under DSS.
