The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency arrested six suspects involved in smuggling drugs by tagging luggage to innocent Nigerian pilgrims, with four already charged to court.
- On Monday, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency arrested 55-year-old Mohammed Ali Abubakar alias Bello Karama and five syndicate members following urgent investigations prompted by families' complaints about detained Nigerians in Jeddah.
- NDLEA investigators found that syndicate members, aided by Skyway Aviation Handling Company staff at MAKIA, secretly tagged six bags during check-in for Ethiopian Airlines flight ET940 on August 6.
- Receipts and confessions show Celestina Emmanuel Yayock and Jazuli Kabir handled multiple bags for ₦100,000 each; Mrs. Maryam Hussain Abdullahi's 9kg bag from Aug. 6 arrived Aug. 16, with three other bags containing drugs.
- NDLEA is engaging Saudi Arabia's General Directorate of Narcotics Control and the Agency's chairman will present findings at an international drug conference; six suspects are in NDLEA custody with four charged to court, and interim security measures approved.
- The agency said this case underscores its dual mission to punish traffickers and protect the innocent, and NDLEA says the detained pilgrims are victims of criminal conspiracies, vowing not to abandon them while pursuing accountability.
