The extreme summer of 2026, with its massive heat waves and severe drought, has further aggravated Lower Lobau in Vienna. Brown meadows, dead pastures, which drive out a second time, and levels whose ends do not even reach into the water – the situation is devastating. The protected area is "extremely bad", the WWF judges. The twelve driest months of the domestic measurement history have left their mark on Lower Lobau, too.
The WWF calls for water from the Danube to be transferred to the Lower Lobau and for the area to be reported in the water renaturation atlas.
Dryness and heat are massively adding to the protected area. Conservationists demand that water from the Danube be introduced.
City is waiting for groundwater flow model to implement further measures. WWF calls for water supply as an acute measure.
