Drone hits Yandex data centre, in first such attack on Russia

The company said the fire halted operations at one of its largest cloud sites and caused service disruptions, with damage still being assessed.

  • On Thursday, a reported Ukrainian drone strike hit a major Yandex data center in Sasovo, Ryazan, causing a large fire and forcing the company to fully suspend operations at the facility.
  • Located on the grounds of the Sasta machine-tool plant, the Sasovo data center serves as Yandex's largest facility, which has been under U.K. sanctions since 2024 for its role in Russia's defense sector.
  • Yandex acknowledged an 'incident' and power-supply problems in its ru-central1-b cloud availability zone; core consumer services remained online despite disruptions to Yandex Cloud infrastructure.
  • Emergency teams assessed infrastructure damage as Yandex stated it could not yet confirm whether restoring the data center equipment is possible, leaving operations suspended indefinitely.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed responsibility for the strike, stating "We always respond in mirror-like fashion," following weeks of Russian attacks on Ukrainian digital infrastructure.
