Florida Inmates Plotting Jail Escape Planned to Have Saw Blade Flown Through Open Window: SJCSO
Investigators say the inmates used a recorded call to seek a drone-delivered saw blade, cellphone and narcotics for the alleged escape.
- On Monday, June 22, 2026, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office charged inmates Joseph Izzi, 38, and Joseph Silcott, 20, for an alleged drone-assisted escape plot. The two men are accused of working together to create an exit route from their shared cell.
- The plot began unraveling on May 16, 2026, when Izzi informed jail staff that Silcott had threatened him with a weapon. This report prompted a cell search that uncovered makeshift weapons and significant structural damage to the facility.
- Recorded phone calls captured Silcott requesting a drone delivery of a saw blade, a cellphone, and narcotics. The inmates dismantled their cell's sink and toilet to create an escape opening while using homemade caulk to hide damage.
- Following the investigation, detectives filed additional charges on June 3, 2026, and both inmates were officially arrested on those counts Monday, June 22, 2026. Both men face criminal mischief of $1,000 or more and remain in custody without bond.
- St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick stated the investigation remains active, focusing on potential outside accomplices who may have facilitated the drone operation. "We will not tolerate inmates attempting to plan an escape," Hardwick said.
