DWP Sends Letters as New Benefits Powers From Wednesday Include Driving Ban
New powers will let the DWP seize cash from bank accounts and, in serious cases, revoke driving licences to recover benefit debts.
On Wednesday, the Department for Work and Pensions began warning thousands of individuals that new enforcement powers under the Public Authorities Act 2025 are now in force.
These measures aim to recover up to £14.6 billion over five years from fraud, error, and debt, addressing the ballooning welfare bill at the heart of Government debate.
Under the PAFER Act, the DWP can seize funds directly from bank accounts without court orders, and driving licences may be revoked for debts exceeding £1,000 where no essential need exists.
Work and Pensions Minister for Transformation Andrew Western stated the system "pursues those who deliberately dodge their debts," urging individuals to contact the department within four months to avoid enforcement.
While the law is effective Wednesday, enforcement begins in October, allowing debtors time to arrange repayment plans before the DWP implements the Eligibility Verification Measure to access bank data.
