TfL Warns ULEZ Fine Dodgers Risk Having Payments Taken Directly From Work Wages
TfL targets a small group responsible for 94% of unpaid fines totaling £789 million, using bankruptcy threats and vehicle seizures to enforce compliance.
Transport for London warned drivers who refuse to pay Ultra Low Emission Zone fines could face bankruptcy proceedings as it ramps up enforcement efforts.
Since the August 2023 expansion, the Ultra Low Emission Zone now covers all London boroughs, with persistent evaders holding 94% of outstanding debt, typically having at least four PCNs.
Between January and June this year, enforcement recovered about £16.5 million, seized more than 530 vehicles, and auctioned over 350 vehicles raising £285,000 b.
Enforcement could include TfL using county courts, placing property liens, and recovering money from employers, while PCNs escalate to £280, halved if paid within 14 days this year.
With 97% of vehicles now Ulez compliant, TfL reports unpaid PCNs total £789.1 million and is collaborating with national agencies to enhance debt collection.
