Drivers warned of £300 fine following change on UK roads this month

With the arrival of the new '76' registration plate, dealerships across the UK are preparing for a busy month of test drives and collections. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders predicts 75,000 new vehicles will leave dealerships this week, with total sales expected to exceed 300,000 by month's end.
Tom Warsop, motor insurance expert at Covertime, said the plate launch creates a "worryingly common insurance blindspot," as many drivers mistakenly assume they are automatically covered when collecting a new car.
Warsop stated that while dealerships may have trade insurance, protection levels vary widely and are not guaranteed. "Ultimately, it's the driver's responsibility to ensure they are properly insured before driving away," he added.
Motorists are being reminded that driving without insurance is illegal, potentially resulting in a £300 fine and six penalty points on their licence. More serious cases may lead to vehicle seizure or a driving ban.
Covertime advises buyers to confirm insurance arrangements before any test drive or collection, ensuring a valid policy is active before driving away. Temporary car insurance may be a suitable option for those needing short-term cover.
