Drivers turn their attention from the buildings to the bumps while testing out DC's IndyCar track
Alex Palou posted the fastest practice lap as drivers dealt with heavy bumps on the new downtown street circuit.
Series points leader Alex Palou topped practice and qualifying on Saturday for Sunday's Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, celebrating the country's 250th birthday on a new 1.7-mile downtown street course.
Pato O'Ward, who won last month at Mid-Ohio, noted 'quite a bit of bumps' on the Pennsylvania Avenue straightaway, particularly heading into Turn 2 and Turn 6, complicating driver strategy.
The 147-lap, 250-mile race remains physically demanding, with O'Ward describing the intense heat and cockpit bouncing; Palou noted the wide track should allow more passing than street circuits like Detroit.
While IndyCar dominates the weekend, NASCAR made its presence felt as four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon swept Saturday's two-race IROC event in Washington, with Kurt Busch runner-up in both.
Featuring the Capitol and Washington Monument, the inaugural event offers distinctive visuals; race chair Bud Denker praised the roads, though the temporary course remains an unknown commodity for Sunday's competition.
