Driver Dies Following Two-Truck Crash at Breadalbane
Police say a road train and a B-double collided and caught fire, leaving one driver missing and closing the main Sydney-Melbourne route.
On Friday, July 17, a B-double truck collided with a road train on the Hume Highway at Breadalbane, igniting both vehicles. One driver was hospitalized with minor injuries; the other remains unaccounted for.
Emergency crews including NSW Fire and Rescue remain on-site as salvage operations continue. Acting Superintendent Peter Murray stated the fire is under control, but northbound lanes will remain closed for several hours.
Motorists are being diverted via the Barton Highway and Federal Highway through Canberra, adding about 80 minutes to travel times. Southbound lanes have reopened, though authorities advise drivers to avoid the area.
Southern Tablelands RFS district zone manager Krystaal Hinds noted one vehicle likely carried aerosol cans, complicating the fire. Police later confirmed the aerosols were on the truck that caught fire.
This incident marks the second major crash at Breadalbane in the past month. On June 30, a multi-truck collision about 5 kilometres south destroyed six semi-trailers, with all drivers escaping serious injury.
