North Korea Warns of ‘Negative Consequences’ for U.S.-S. Korea Military Drills
PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA, AUG 11 – North Korea calls the joint U.S.-South Korea Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises a provocation and warns of resolute countermeasures to defend its sovereignty, involving 21,000 personnel, officials said.
- On Aug. 11, No Kwang Chol condemned the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, calling them `a direct military provocation against the DPRK` and warning of `negative consequences`.
- Starting August 18, the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises will run until August 28 with around 21,000 personnel, and a South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command representative said they are “defensive in nature.”
- Around 18,000 South Korean troops and an estimated 3000 U.S. troops will participate, as half of Ulchi Freedom Shield’s 44 planned exercises are rescheduled to next month.
- North Korea will react with "resolute counteraction" if provocations cross its boundary line, as the DPRK said Monday, asserting its sovereign right of self-defense.
- Removing loudspeakers, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s administration has taken steps to improve ties, as North Korea dismantled its own speakers on Saturday.
