Major Cross Border Drug Operation Discovered in San Diego County
Authorities say the two-year probe uncovered a cross-border network that moved methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine through San Diego County.
On Friday, federal authorities announced indictments of 42 members of the Poway-based Varrio Hidden Hills gang following a two-year investigation into a drug distribution network stretching from Oceanside to the U.S.-Mexico border.
High-Ranking member John Marquez allegedly ran the cross-border operation, receiving drugs from Mexico-based suppliers and distributing them throughout San Diego County via local gang networks, prosecutors described as "increasingly violent and sophisticated."
Early Wednesday, FBI agents serving warrants at a Lemon Grove residence came under fire through the front door and window, though authorities confirmed no one was injured during the dangerous encounter.
Law enforcement officials arrested 35 suspects on Wednesday and Thursday across the region and beyond into Riverside County and Central California, while federal agents continue tracking the remaining eight suspects.
U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon stated the investigation remains ongoing, noting the case highlights how gang operations often hide within ordinary residential communities, evading detection until targeted by large-scale federal actions.
