She was the youngest of eight children, seven girls and one boy, born to Clarence and Ruth Vickers. She attended Sheridan Community High School, graduating in 1950, after which she attended Parks Business College in Denver, Colorado for one year. Dorothy married Jack Nation on December 18, 1953, in Los Angeles, California. The couple made their home in Carson, California, where Dorothy stayed at home and raised their son, Jackie, and five daughters, Vicki, Tammi, Lorri, Conni, and Sherri.
