Doping-India to Criminalise Doping Supply Chains to Boost Bid to Host Olympics
The proposed law would also punish coaches and medical practitioners, as India says more than 7,000 tests and 350 awareness sessions were held in 2025-26.
- On Tuesday, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced India plans to amend the National Anti-Doping Act, criminalizing trafficking and distribution of banned substances to athletes. The move aims to strengthen sporting integrity ahead of the country's 2036 Olympic Games bid in Ahmedabad.
- India has topped the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of worst dope offenders among major countries for the past three years. This prompted the Athletics Integrity Unit to move the Athletics Federation of India to the highest-risk Category A.
- Amendments will impose up to five years of imprisonment for suppliers of prohibited substances. During 2025-26, the National Anti-Doping Agency conducted over 7,000 tests and more than 350 awareness sessions, reaching 27,000 participants.
- The Parliament's winter session, expected in the last week of November, will introduce these criminal provisions. Mandaviya made the announcement after chairing meetings under the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport.
- Supporting athlete awareness, the Know Your Medicine application has recorded over half a million searches. "Sporting excellence must always be accompanied by integrity," Mandaviya said, reflecting India's commitment to fair competition standards.
