Donegal nun appointed by Pope to senior role in Vatican
The Donegal native will oversee the Vatican’s global missionary funds and networks as the first woman in the post, officials said.
On Thursday, Pope Leo XIV appointed Mary Teresa Barron as Adjunct Secretary of the Dicastery for Evangelization, with responsibility as President of the Pontifical Mission Societies.
A native of Donegal, Ireland, Barron has served as Superior General of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles since 2018 and holds Masters degrees in Public Healthcare Administration and International Development.
This appointment marks a continuing shift toward integrating qualified women into top leadership roles within the Roman Curia, as Barron is the first woman entrusted with this responsibility in the Vatican.
Describing the appointment as "completely unexpected," Barron expressed a "heart filled with gratitude, humility, and trust in God's providence," noting the role honors the 150 years of missionary service of her Congregation.
Before this appointment, she served as President of the Service of Documentation and Study on Global Mission and the International Union of Superiors General; Barron will assume her new duties on January 4, 2027.
