Done deal: Zach Merrett finally secures big-money move to Hawthorn
Merrett leaves Essendon after a year of stalled talks and will join the Hawks on a four-year deal worth $4 million.
On Monday, 31-year-old Zach Merrett secured a trade to Hawthorn from Essendon, signing a four-year deal worth $4 million in exchange for picks 15 and 25 plus a future second-round selection.
Unlike last year's failed negotiations, Hawthorn moved swiftly this season to finalize the deal for Merrett, who won a record-equalling seventh Crichton Medal at Essendon and played 23 games this year.
Hawthorn list boss Mark McKenzie said the coaching group's strength is their "ability to move around players and play them in different positions," noting Merrett's arrival will not hinder Josh Ward's development.
Securing Merrett signals Hawthorn's confidence they can acquire restricted free agent Ben King from Gold Coast without using their current first-round pick, as the club expects the Suns to accept selection seven as compensation.
As the trade period continues until Wednesday, October 15, Essendon is managing roster changes, including announcing that Archie Perkins re-signed on a one-year deal.
