SUFC News: Chris Wilder Makes Billy Sharp Admission After Retirement U-Turn
Sharp returns after a three-week retirement, giving AFC Rushden & Diamonds an experienced forward for its first FA Cup first-round tie.
Former Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp reversed his retirement to join eighth-tier AFC Rushden & Diamonds, signing a short-term deal for their FA Cup first-round tie against Burton Albion on Saturday.
Sharp first played for the original Rushden on loan in 2005, scoring nine goals in 16 appearances; the phoenix club signed him following midfielder James Clifton's suspension.
With 299 professional goals across a 22-year career, Sharp seeks his 300th goal in the upcoming match, which will mark his 814th professional appearance at Pirelli Stadium.
The club announcement stated Sharp would be "putting on the shirt for the final time" against the Brewers, a fixture marking the first time AFC Rushden & Diamonds has reached the Cup Round Proper.
Sharp announced his retirement just last month after leaving Doncaster Rovers; Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder expressed surprise at the U-turn, noting that Sharp "still keeps himself incredibly fit.
