South Yorkshire Father Tried to Save Daughter Before Both Drowned, Inquest Hears
Post-mortems gave drowning as the provisional cause, and the coroner said the circumstances raise concern the deaths may have been unnatural.
- On July 26, John Peter Collins, 66, and his daughter, Samantha Adele Collins, 32, died after being pulled from the water at Fistral Beach in Newquay. The pair were fishing on rocks when Samantha was dragged into the sea.
- During an inquest at the Court, the Cornwall Coroner heard John attempted to save Samantha after she was swept away. The family from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, had been on holiday in the coastal town.
- Post-Mortem examinations conducted at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Treliske on July 29 identified the provisional cause of death for both as drowning. Assistant Emma Hillson presided over the hearing.
- Police are searching for a missing orange or peach-coloured handbag Samantha carried into the water, which is "thought to contain a number of personal items of great sentimental value to her loved ones."
- Given the circumstances, the Cornwall Coroner suspects the deaths may have resulted from an unnatural cause, adjourning the inquest for a full hearing scheduled for July 19, 2027.
