Born March 25, 1932, in Vancouver, Don grew up in East Vancouver and went on to study engineering at UBC. A mechanical engineer by profession, he had a lifelong love of aviation and, in his youth, was a licensed pilot. He built RC model airplanes, played the clarinet, and was known for his gentle temperament and quiet sense of humour.
