Don Mattingly Has Weird Role at All-Star Game, Coaching Against His Former Blue Jays
Mattingly said he felt torn after leaving Toronto, and he will coach under Dave Roberts while Philadelphia stays in the NL playoff race.
On Tuesday, Philadelphia Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly will coach the National League against manager John Schneider and his former Blue Jays staff at the All-Star Game in Citizens Bank Park.
Mattingly left his role as Toronto's bench coach following the World Series loss to the Dodgers, initially believing his baseball career had concluded after years in the game.
The 65-year-old Mattingly is in his 23rd straight season as a manager or coach, having played 14 seasons for the Yankees before leading the Dodgers and Miami Marlins.
Encouraged by his son Louis to continue coaching, Mattingly joined the Phillies organization where his son Preston serves as general manager, supporting former manager Rob Thomson.
Under Mattingly, the Phillies hold a 45-24 record since April, placing the team two games behind Atlanta in the NL East as he pursues a second season as manager.
