Does size really matter?
- A new PLOS Biology study by Upama Aich and colleagues found penis size influences perceived female attractiveness and male assessments of fighting ability, based on ratings from over 800 adult participants.
- Driven by long-standing debates in evolutionary biology, the research team at the University of Western Australia tested if the human penis is a badge of status or a sexual ornament, as prior work mainly focused on female choice and unusual human penile size.
- The team produced 343 computer-generated male figures varying three traits with seven values, shown as 30° rotating video clips in two formats to about 200 females and 600 males.
- Female participants rated taller, more V-shaped men with larger penises as more attractive, while male participants viewed rivals with larger penises as more threatening and sexually competitive.
- Future work could examine how flaccid penis models interact with facial features, voice, movement, and cultural variation, as authors caution real-world assessments need broader integration, Dr. Upama Aich and Professor Michael Jennions say.

Does penis size make a man more attractive to women? A research team has now investigated this question and comes to the surprising conclusion: Yes, it depends on size. But experts vehemently disagree. They warn against a resurgent "penis cult".

Penis size may matter more to men than women
Human history is full of juvenile jokes, odd stereotypes, and outright harmful misinformation about the size of a man’s penis. But the long and short of the real science behind size suggests that men themselves are more likely than women to get riled up about the subject. According to a study published today in the journal PLOS Biology, men routinely feel more physically and sexually threatened by well-endowed rivals—regardless of how women feel…
