District discharges Renton High School boys basketball coach
A hearing officer found sufficient cause after an investigation into sexual messages between Powell and two students’ mothers, district officials said.
On Wednesday, Oct. 21, the Renton School Board confirmed the discharge of Rashaad Powell, an assistant principal and basketball coach at Renton High School, effective immediately.
Powell's discharge comes over six months after he was placed on administrative leave in April 2026 following an investigation into messages between him and mothers of two students described as sexual.
Renton School District spokesperson Randy Matheson said a hearing officer determined the district had "sufficient cause to discharge Mr. Powell," while Powell claimed the investigation was biased and vowed to provide "the other side."
Under Washington state law, Powell retains the right to appeal the discharge to King County Superior Court, Matheson confirmed, though the district has not yet received notification of whether he plans to pursue this option.
Powell has remained active on Facebook recently since the hearing's conclusion, though his lawyer Tyler Firkins has not responded to requests for comment from The Reporter regarding potential appeals.
