Five Dead, 10 Rescued In Ibadan Tanker Crash
Officials said brake failure caused the tanker crash, and the Federal Road Safety Corps recorded 268 tanker-related crashes in Nigeria in 2025.
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, a tanker crashed along the Iwo Road–Ojoo Expressway in Ibadan, killing five people, according to Oyo State Fire Service Chairman Hon. Maroof Akinwande.
Brake failure caused the 45,000-litre tanker to somersault into a Nissan Micra and three other vehicles; responders recovered five bodies and rescued 10 survivors.
Emergency responders transported the five deceased—identified as two men and three women—to the Adeoyo Hospital Mortuary while officers from Kajorepo Divisional Police Headquarters secured the scene.
According to official Ayoade, a broken-down trailer near Arilogu caused traffic congestion at about 5 a.m., preceding the crash that involved approximately six vehicles.
Road transport accounts for more than 95% of Nigeria's fuel distribution, while the Federal Road Safety Corps recorded 268 tanker-related crashes in 2025, underscoring persistent transit risks.
