Yainer Diaz Homers in 3-Run 3rd, Astros Beat Diamondbacks 3-1
Yainer Díaz sparked a three-run third inning, and Josh Hader earned his 23rd save as Houston limited Arizona to three hits.
On Friday, the Houston Astros defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 behind Yainer Diaz's solo home run and Cristian Javier's eight strikeouts in five innings.
Houston moved a season-high four games over.500 at 73-69 with its fifth victory in the last six games. The win expands the Astros' lead in the West to 2 1/2 games over the Texas Rangers.
During the third inning, Jeremy and Yordan Alvarez hit back-to-back singles, followed by Isaac Paredes's RBI double and Jose Altuve's sacrifice fly that scored Alvarez.
Josh Hader secured his 23rd save in as many chances, marking his 250th career save. Bryan Abreu pitched 1 1/3 innings to support the bullpen effort.
The Diamondbacks have lost four of their last five games and now sit tied with the San Diego Padres for the final wild-card spot. Starter Merrill Kelly fell to 9-13 after surrendering three runs in six innings.
