Detectorist Finds His Second Bronze Age Hoard in Two Years
The hoard includes two bronze axe-heads, clay moulds and a copper ingot that researchers say is the first of its kind found in Scotland.
Metal detectorist Mariusz Stepien discovered the Blyth Hoard in 2022, located seven miles from the Peebles Hoard he unearthed in 2020 in the Scottish Borders.
Dubbed the Blyth Hoard, this 3,000-year-old collection dates from the Late Bronze Age and includes two bronze axe-heads and a complete copper ingot.
The recovered clay moulds suggest the site may have manufactured fittings for the Peebles Hoard, while the copper ingot represents the first of its kind found in Scotland.
After being reported to the Treasure Trove Unit, the artifacts were transported to the National Museums Collection Centre in Edinburgh for conservation and analysis.
Dr. Matthew Knight, curator of prehistory at National Museums Scotland, described the find as "really incredible," noting researchers hope further analysis will reveal details about the people behind both hoards.
A detector discovered in Scotland a Bronze Age treasure, about 3,000 years old, just 11 kilometers from another treasure found by it. Among the artifacts is a rare copper linguette.
